“It is with a heavy heart that Corky’s in Sherman Oaks will be closing its operation on 12/15/19,” ownership wrote via social media.

“Corkys has been serving the community since the 1960s. Under current ownership since 1980 three generations have worked and operated Corky’s…”

The San Fernando Valley restaurant, at 5043 Van Nuys Blvd, is closing as part of a lease dispute, and claims that the building that houses the restaurant will be demolished, are swirling.

Corky’s is situated in a Googie-style building designed by Armet & Davis, which ownership feels is justification enough to keep the business open.

“Landlords just don’t appreciate these unique style buildings and design,” according to the Facebook post.

“Unfortunately, landlords also have looked past the history with true American Family Establishments and communities like ours will be forever changed. Our establishment has witnessed customers get married, have children and then watch them grow and have their own families. Landmarks like Corky’s should be saved. Corky’s is a thriving business that feeds hundreds of customers daily and employing over 40 great staff members who depend on Corky’s for their families. It is hard to understand.”

There has been a strong swell of community support since the closure announcement.

A petition entitled “Save Historic Corky’s From Demolition” seeking 1,000 signatures has been posted to Change.org.

As of this writing, the petition has garnered some 600 signatures within hours of going live.

“We are all very sad and we have heavy hearts as though we are losing a family member. Thank You to all our loyal customers we loved being of service to you. Farewell.”
