The council voted during its July 31 meeting to support L.A. City Planning approval of the project, which would consist of a 63-story and 42-story towers at the Angels Knoll site in Bunker Hill. Project plans call for 180 for-sale condos, 252 apartments, 72,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, and two hotels with a combined 515 guest rooms. A letter on behalf of the council will be included in the developers’ application for the project, which is currently under review by the city planning commission.

Behind Angels Landing is a joint venture, Angels Landing Partners, comprised of developers MacFarlane Partners, which was involved with the Ritz Carlton-J.W. Marriott project at L.A. Live; The Peebles Corporation; and Claridge Properties. If approved, the project will be the largest hotel development helmed by Black developers in L.A. history.

“The DLANC Board of Directors fully recognizes the importance of our project – the largest hotel development to be built by African American developers in L.A.’s history,” R. Donahue Peebles, president and CEO, The Peebles Corporation, said in a statement. “With goals for economic inclusion being top-of-mind nationally and locally, they’re aware of the positive impact Angels Landing will have on the DTLA community and L.A. County in creating new jobs in construction, advancing hospitality careers for African Americans and other under-represented workforce members, and achieving desired levels of diversity and inclusion in employment and contracting through our project.”

The project would create 8,300 new jobs during the construction and design of the project, 800 permanent jobs in Downtown L.A. and another 500 jobs for local vendors supporting the hotels, according to an analysis by BJH Advisors Inc. The developers have said previously that they expect approval from the city to come this year, and project it to be completed by 2028.
