The parent company, Kura Corporation, first opened up shop in 1977 and has franchised over 450 locations in Japan, Taiwan, and the United States. What sets Kura Sushi aside from most sushi joints is that it was one of the original revolving sushi concepts — where dishes are set on a rotating conveyor belt.

The chefs at Kura Sushi put a lot of focus on the rice and vinegar of the ingredients. According to the website, the team evaluates over 100 varieties of rice prior to selecting the ones they want for their vinegar recipe. Kura Sushi uses all-natural ingredients with no additives.

On top of the Sherman Oaks location currently being under full construction, Kura Sushi is also currently in the midst of building restaurants in Troy, Michigan; Aventura, Florida; and Bellevue, Washington. Currently, no opening dates are known.
