Interior designer and contractor Ilan Dayan told What Now Los Angeles that as construction began on the site, locals approached with curiosity and excitement over what would replace the frozen yogurt shop, which had been a popular local spot until its closure in the summer of 2019.

With schools and gyms nearby, Dayan explained that the neighborhood has been in need of a new space for locals to commune. When a vacancy became available in the area, where Dayan had formerly lived, he and owner Ben Assil jumped on the opportunity. The two make an ideal team with their combined experience in construction, interior design, and the restaurant industry.

The European-inspired cafe, which Dayan described as “contemporary with a rustic touch” and a “twist of the west coast,” will offer exceptional coffee, ice cream, smoothies, protein shakes, and sandwiches.

Dayan told What Now Los Angeles that Cal Cafe is simply waiting on licensing and anticipates being open any time from a week to a month from now. The neighborhood can’t wait!
