The company is owned and operated by Mel’s Daughter, Georgette Powell, who took over from her father in 2001. Mel’s Fish Shack had its last day at its original location on Sunday, September 29th, when the entire menu was 22 percent off. The sign on the restaurant states that Mel’s is moving and improving. It’s unclear where Mel’s Fish Shack will land and when it will open, but it will serve the same delicious seafood passed down for three generations.
“Celebrating Mel’s legacy with three generations!” according to the company’s Instagram. “Meet the incredible women behind it all – Janie, Georgette, and granddaughter Ayanna, continuing the family tradition and keeping the spirit of Mel’s Fish Shack alive. Today marks a special moment as we say goodbye to this iconic location. Thank you to all our loyal customers for being part of the journey.”
When the company finds its new home and relocates, customers can expect the same delicious seafood, with plenty of fish, shrimp, and oyster options and combos, served with southern-style sides. The restaurant also offers healthier choices from the girl, such as grilled salmon salad with a signature ginger vinaigrette dressing and grilled fish wraps served with their delicious garlic dill sauce. It’s no wonder why this restaurant has been around for more than four decades.
“In the wake of her father’s untimely passing in 2001, Georgette Powell stepped into the role of custodian for Mel’s Fish,” according to the company’s website. “Carrying on her father’s legacy, Georgette has infused her own passion and expertise into the business, ensuring that Mel’s Fish remains a beloved institution within the community. With her steadfast commitment to maintaining the high standards set by her father, Georgette strives to provide a warm and inviting atmosphere, where customers can savor the flavors of Louisiana cuisine while experiencing the essence of true Southern hospitality. Under her leadership, Mel’s Fish continues to be a beacon of culinary excellence, enchanting taste buds and creating lasting memories for all who step through its doors.”
