The L.A. Planning Commission just approved a new Mexican restaurant for Canoga Park, Catrina Mexican Seafood. The 4,500 square-foot eatery at 22323 Sherman Way will include 125 seats, a bar, a back room dining area and plenty of parking. Owner Jovita Duenas said the space is currently undergoing renovations and should be open in the next few weeks.

Duenas previously co-owned Candilejas in Sun Valley, another seafood-focused Mexican restaurant, before deciding to venture off on her own to open Catrina’s.

“Canoga Park is well populated and has a broader community of people which we think will enjoy our dishes. We hope everyone comes by to give us a try!” said Duenas.

The menu will focus on seafood items like Catrina ceviche cured in lime and lemon, and different seafood and mixto molcajetes. The eatery will also take inspiration from Duenas’ Mexican heritage with dishes like her mother’s Sinaloa-style barbacoa recipe.

The team is hoping to be able to serve beer and wine upon opening, and potentially cocktails later down the road.
