NORMS Restaurant Delaying All Planned Locations, Some On Hold Until 2021

Rapidly-expanding diner chain has delayed incoming outposts in Encino, Rialto, Northridge, Ontario Mills at the Mall, and Thai Town.

After announcing aggressive expansion plans last year, NORMS Restaurant has delayed all of its new locations and put some on hold until 2021 like the outpost planned in the Ralph’s-anchored Hollywest Promenade shopping center, at 5453 Hollywood Blvd. The all-day diner since 1949 signed its lease for the incoming Thai Town outpost in mid-2019, the latest-known deal for the company.

“All new restaurant development has been temporarily delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” NORMS CEO Mike Colonna told What Now Los Angeles (WNLA) in an email Monday via a spokesperson.

Peter Schultz, director of facilities for NORMS, in late-2019, submitted a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) application seeking a change of use from retail to restaurant for its forthcoming Thai Town eatery. The CUP was submitted not long after the company signed a 10-year lease for the space. Commercial real estate brokerage firm Matthews, the company leasing the Hollywest Promenade, on Monday did not respond to WNLA’s request for comment.

All other in-the-works NORMS, including in Encino, Rialto, Northridge, and Ontario Mills at the Mall, are delayed, the spokesperson confirmed. There was no indication given on when specifically the incoming restaurants would move forward as planned. NORMS did manage to open its newest location in Inglewood at the end of 2019 (pictured above).

[Editor’s note: an earlier version of this article indicated that all planned NORMS restaurant had been placed on hold until 2021. While all of the planned locations are delayed, only the Thai Town outpost has been pushed into 2021.]

It’s 2022. Not a hint of change. I’ve stopped even hoping.

Waiting for Norms Northridge to open since Acapulco’s been razed. Still holding that $10 promo gift card though it won’t cover breakfast anymore.
