Chef Curtis Stone’s Temporary Picnic-Inspired Restaurant To Debut Sept. 14 in The Grove

Picnic Society by Gwen will last four months offering pre-made baskets with blankets, cutlery, and even miniature tables for a true picnic experience.

Curtis Stone later this month is opening a restaurant in The Grove called Picnic Society by Gwen, according to an announcement Friday. The Michelin-Starred chef’s new restaurant will be temporary, however, lasting a total of four months in the outdoor retail center. Picnic Society will debut Monday, September 14, offering a menu influenced by sister Hollywood butcher shop Gwen.

Picnic Society replaces 189 by Dominique Ansel which, after opening in 2017, at 189 The Grove Dr 1st Floor, has permanently closed. Chef Dominque Ansel announced the news on Instagram shortly following Stone’s announcement.

“The world has changed in recent months, and so has the way that we enjoy food and come together,” Stone Friday said in a prepared statement. “I began thinking back to the stories of early 19th century gatherings of ‘picnic societies’ in Europe. With good food and the right company, you can really make anywhere in the world your restaurant, and I look forward to elevating this experience for the Los Angeles community.”

As its name suggests, Angelenos can expect a grab-and-go picnic market with a menu of salads and sandwiches served alongside pre-made baskets, blankets, cutlery, and even miniature tables for a true picnic experience. Also available will be charcuterie and cheeses, and other food items like spreads.

Stone teased the concept on Instagram in early-August, posting the above picture with the caption, “Picnic perfect charcuterie.”
