Representatives for Mt. Lebanon on Tuesday evening is presenting the latest project details to the Mid City West Community Council.

The presentation is strictly informational.

Plans call for the conversion of the church’s one-story cathedral building and three other buildings that are part of the existing campus, including a two-story rectory, one-story social hall, three-story office building and a surface parking lot, into a 19-story tower primarily for residential use.

The existing cathedral building was constructed in 1937 for St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, which occupied the building until 1966, when the site was sold to its current owner, Mt. Lebanon, which needed a new location to serve its growing congregation.

Established in 1923 on the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, Mt. Lebanon was the first Maronite Catholic congregation in the City of Los Angeles and served immigrants, primarily of Lebanese and Syrian origin.

Mt. Lebanon is proposing to deconstruct most of the existing cathedral building and temporarily store it at an offsite location.

Following the completion of the subterranean parking structure and the shell of the residential tower proposed as part of the project, the cathedral would be reassembled and rehabilitated in its approximate original location, with some modifications.

The three existing ancillary church buildings would be demolished.

In addition to the rehabilitation of the existing cathedral, the Project includes the development of new ancillary church uses, including meeting rooms, offices and a multi-purpose room, in a 3-story building, and a 19-story residential apartment building with 153 dwelling units, including 17 units (15 percent) designated as restricted affordable at the Very Low Income level.

Construction on the Beverly Grove church is estimated to begin in 2021 after the entitlement/permit process is complete.
