Sky’s Gourmet Tacos to Expand SoCal Footprint with Inglewood Location

The nearly 30-year-old taco restaurant won’t open its new site in the Hollywood Park development for another few years.

By May of 2022, Inglewood will get a brand new Mexican restaurant with a splash of soul. Sky’s Gourmet Tacos is slated to open at a newly constructed, 3,883-square-foot site, at 1269 S District Drive, according to a spokesperson for the restaurant. It will be part of the Hollywood Park/SoFi Stadium development whose previously-announced tenants include Cinépolis and Three Weavers Brewing Company.

The menu focuses on gourmet tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and Texas-style ribs. Other offerings include stacked nachos, several flavors of cheesecake, and housemade lemonades. Vegetarian options are also available.

Barbara Burrell, the owner, opened the first Sky’s Tacos in the Midcity neighborhood in March 1992. It has since grown with a catering division, called Sky’s Gourmet Catering. In 2016, Sky’s Gourmet Market Place opened in the Marina City Club in Marina del Rey, offering a full deli and grocery store to locals. More recently, in September 2020, Sky’s Gourmet Tacos opened its first Downtown Los Angeles location, at 358 W 38th Street.

William Yarbro of the Inglewood office of Keller Williams, who represented Burrell in securing the lease along with Charles Bowles, said in a statement, “It was especially gratifying to represent Barbara Burrell and her team in securing this location. As a Black woman entrepreneur, she has overcome obstacles and succeeded as a business woman.”

In Inglewood, the area is seeing an uptick in redevelopment, as seen with the new stadium for the Rams and Chargers at the former Hollywood Park site. The site is also slated for 2,500 residential units, 500,000 square feet of retail space, a 300-room hotel, and 780,000 square feet of office space.

The inaugural location of Sky’s Gourmet Tacos, at 5408 W Pico Boulevard, serves over 1,000 tacos each month.

This article has been updated with new details from a press release by the Inglewood office of Keller Williams, who represented the restaurateur in securing a lease.
