Owner Cindy Seam has secured a ten-year lease to bring the customizable desserts shop to the Canoga Park neighborhood nearby, at 7138 Shoup Ave., in space previously occupied by California Frozen Poppers — a victim of the pandemic.

Seam, a pastry chef and self-proclaimed foodie, told What Now Los Angeles in a telephone interview while decorating a donut birthday cake Friday, SugarBox will likely open in its new home in June 2021.

Seam launched SugarBox less than a year ago, opening in a massive 2,600 square-foot space, with plans to host on-site birthday parties and guests looking to imbibe in freshly-prepared baked goods and hand-crafted beverages. SugarBox uses potato flour instead of wheat flour for its donuts.

And then the pandemic hit, rendering at least half of the space useless, Seam said. But the restauratuer can’t complain, all things considered.

“We’ve been doing well,” Seam said. “Birthday orders come in every single day. Decorative donuts, birthday donuts. We’ve had customers drive in from as far as Riverside. People come here instead of doing cupcakes and regular cakes.”

When the lease is up in October, Seam said SugarBox Woodland Hills could stay put if the landlord will cut the space in half. That’s unlikely, Seam said. “If they don’t, we’ll move.”

The Canoga Park space on Shoup Ave. is Seam’s dream forever space for SugarBox.

“It’s going to be my dream shop,” Seam said. “There’s going to be patio space. Super cute and more of my personality. More desserts and more flavors.”
