Decro Corporation, a Los Angeles nonprofit affordable housing developer, broke ground on the first phase of The Brine, a multi-phase project created to revitalize Lincoln Heights by attracting investment in the community and satisfying residents’ critical need for access to affordable housing, healthcare, healthy foods, and childcare, on March 22, 2022.

Brine Residential, the development’s first phase, is designed to offer housing and other essential community services. The 97-unit permanent supportive and affordable housing project will shelter a diverse population, including the chronically mentally ill, homeless veterans and seniors, and transition-age youth as well as low-income individuals and families. On-site case management offices, two community rooms (including a teaching kitchen), a classroom, and a fitness room will also be located within the project, together with an on-site property manager’s office and apartment.

Mental health needs of all residents will be responded to by the on-site case managers from Violence Intervention Program Community Mental Health Center and The People Concern, helping those who were formerly homeless transition to permanent housing.

Additionally, the local community will be able to buy fresh, healthy food at The Brine’s food hall. A Homegirl Café and a childcare center to serve toddlers to preschool age children will complete the project.

Brine Residential will be situated atop The Brine, a 28,000 square foot commercial project located on the site of the former A-1 Eastern Homemade Pickle Company. Future phases of The Brine will create a community campus where residents as well as Lincoln Heights residents will be able to utilize healthcare services offered in a 27,000 square foot medical office complex and a separate pediatric mental health center focusing on children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

Project completion is scheduled for summer 2023.
