The Fredericks offer breakfast all day (burritos, plates, sandwiches, and hamcakes — a salty, savory twist on the classic crab cake) and handcrafted sandwiches and soups for lunch before they close at 2 p.m.
For dessert, the pair bake-up bacon chocolate chip cookies that are as unmissable as they are unmistakable.
Further details about Ham ‘n Scram’s Long Beach location are forthcoming as a What Now Los Angeles interview with the founders is in the works.
This article has been edited to include an interview with Founders Forrest & Jeremy:
WNLA: Why did you start Ham ‘n Scram and, most importantly, why ham?
Jeremy: Back in 2010, during the economic downturn, neither Forrest nor I were really working, so we started talking about opening a restaurant.
Back in Michigan where I was born and where Forrest is from, they have a restaurant that serves fresh-carved ham daily, so we kind of landed on that as an idea because you can’t really find that out here. If you want to buy ham out here, it’s most likely at the deli.
WNLA: Why are you opening a second location? Do you have plans for more growth?
Forrest: Well, we certainly wanted to grow; if you’re not growing, you’re going. Jeremy coincidentally lives in Long Beach and I live not far from our maiden operation in Westminster. So we thought Long Beach would be the perfect market.
I don’t know that we’ll ever be a giant chain, but with a little bit more buying power and exposure, we should be able to open a third and fourth location as well.
WNLA: Which elements of Ham ‘n Scram’s operation have provided you the most success?
F&J: We would say our customer service and the quality of our food. We make everything to order and everything in-house from our salsas to our soups. And when people come in, they get treated kindly, so it’s comfort food in a comfortable environment.
WNLA: Will this location offer the exact same menu as your Westminster location? How will this location be different?
F&J: We might add a few items to both spots, but the menus will be identical.
The layout of the Long Beach location will be a little different and have a fresher look, but other than that, we’re aiming to keep everything the same; people like what we’re doing.
WNLA: How do you plan to immerse yourself in the Long Beach community?
F&J: We’re going to start by hiring people from Long Beach to create a local vibe and feel. We also want to get involved with the community in any way we can and branch out from there.
