Since launching in 2019, the bakery has earned its tagline, “There are no(w) good bagels in California,” with one New York Times critic even titling their review, “The Best Bagels Are in California (Sorry, New York).”

Boichik was founded by Emily Winston, a central New Jersey native who was inspired by the bagels she grew up eating, particularly at Zabar’s and H&H on the Upper West Side.

“In 2010 I moved to the Bay Area and bemoaned the lack of proper bagels. When I heard that my most beloved H&H on the Upper West Side had been shut down for tax fraud, I was so distraught…And so I embarked on what became my five year quest, through trial and error, to create a bagel I longed to eat,” says Boichik’s website.

After taste testing her products with friends, Winston hosted pop-ups that turned out to be wildly popular and eventually opened her first brick-and-mortar in Berkley in 2019. Today, the growing bagel empire has six stores in Northern California and is planning three additional outposts in San Francisco. Customers can even find Boichik brand bagels in Erewhon’s frozen section.

Boichik offers a variety of bialy and bagel flavors, house made cream cheese spreads, platters, lox, sable, and different salads including whitefish, tuna and egg.
