When fully complete in 2023, the project will consolidate the two terminals into a 1.2 million-square-foot, 27-gate complex also connected to the Tom Bradley International Terminal. A consolidated check-in lobby will include 32 self-serve kiosks and 46 check-in positions serving customers upon arrival.

On April 20, customers will have access to the lobby as well as expanded security checkpoint and baggage claim areas. A completely renovated Delta Sky Club at LAX will also be open to passengers next month.

“Over a decade ago, we committed to becoming the premier airline of Los Angeles,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian said in a statement. “Today, we are celebrating a huge milestone in making the Delta Sky Way project dream a reality. In partnership with LAWA and the City of Los Angeles, we’ve built a modern, state-of-the-art facility that will make travel through LAX a seamless and elevated experience.”

The project’s progress — 18 months ahead of schedule thanks to the recent travel slowdown, the Los Angeles Times reports — is part of an ongoing effort to modernize the airport that has included a $477.5 million extension of Terminal 1 and the $1.7 billion West Gates at Tom Bradley International Terminal.

“LAX is a central pillar of our economic strength, and our ability to bounce back so strongly from the pandemic is largely tied to direct investments we’ve made to help realize its full potential,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement.

“This facility is just the latest milestone in our work to completely reimagine this airport — joining a long list of recently completed projects that are transforming the passenger experience and turning LAX into one of the premier airports in the world.”

Delta’s consolidation and modernization project will feature a number of new bells and whistles.

The new check-in and baggage drop area will include a 250-foot digital back wall spanning the length of the facility and featuring volume and gate information. Moreover, the facility will offer qualifying customers departing LAX the option to use facial recognition technology for the hands-free checking of bags.

One of the largest in Delta’s system, the renovated Sky Club includes more than 30,000 square feet of premium space. It will offer an indoor/outdoor double bar, a year-round outdoor Sky Deck, and other features, including premium showers.
