Fixins Soul Kitchen, a Sacramento-based soul food restaurant founded by former Sacramento Mayor and NBA player Kevin Johnson, is opening a location in Los Angeles.

Details about the new outpost are scant at this point; the only indicator that Fixins is moving to Los Angeles is a message on its website. What Now Los Angeles has reached out to Fixins for more information and will update this article when the restaurant responds.

Fixins serves soul food eats like fried chicken, chicken and waffles, gravy-smothered pork chops and fried catfish with a crispy cornmeal crust. Diners can choose from a selection of “fixins” to go with their entree, including collard greens, candied yams, black-eyed peas, red beans and rice and grits. Fixins’ Sacramento location also serves cocktails, bourbon and beer.

The restaurant was founded in 2019 in Sacramento’s Oak Park neighborhood with the goal of celebrating African American history and culture, according to Fixins’ website. Johnson was inspired to open a soul food restaurant based on his experience craving his family’s cooking while he was on the road as an NBA player.
