The new restaurant will replace Johnny Rockets, which closed down in 2019, at Del Amo Fashion Center, above Lazy Dog Restaurant. Slater’s 50/50 was expected to open this new location in early 2021, but the pandemic likely delayed plans. This will be the fourth brick-and-mortar in Los Angeles, following Pasadena, Valencia, and Covina, plus a food truck. The Anaheim Hill-based company was started in 2009 by Scott Slater and now has 11 full-service restaurants in California, Nevada, Texas, and Hawaii.

The SoCal native was inspired by the belief that bacon is meat candy and created the original 50/50 patty– made of 50% ground bacon and 50% ground beef. The ‘rebel gastropub’ has won several “Best Of” awards and has been recognized by various local, regional, and national media outlets. Some publications to feature the restaurant include People, Food & Wine, Foodbeast, Huffington Post, Travel Channel’s Bacon Paradise, Discovery Channel’s United States of Bacon, and The Howard Stern Show.

While Slater’s 50/50 did close a couple of units during the COVID-19 pandemic, the remaining restaurant had “the best month we’ve had in years,” Slater told the Franchise Times earlier this year. He expects dine-in traffic to rebound and grow eventually. At the same time, the company is committed to its full-service model, and they are exploring other formats while perfecting online ordering and delivery over the last several months.
