“Our very first U.S.-based store was in Hawaii, but we shut that down due to the tourism decline during the pandemic,” said Evans.
But the team is coming back stronger than ever. In addition to the company-owned store in Los Angeles, Kazan currently has a franchised location under construction in Houston and is in talks for restaurants in Pennsylvania, Boston and Toronto.
Kazan, which means “volcano” in Japanese, is known for its tonkatsu ramen as well as its “volcano” ramen, which is presented in a stone bowl and served with noodles and hot broth that is poured at the table.
“The ramen cooks for a minute with the volcano cap on, which shoots out steam once the soup is ready,” explained Evans.
Additionally, the restaurant will offer an “ice kazan,” described as a “shaved ice volcano dessert” that is served atop dry ice and comes in flavors like strawberry, lemon, melon and matcha. There will also be beer, wine and Japanese rice wine.
“Our concept is very Japanese oriented. There will be Japanese pop music playing, modern interior decor, Japanese hanging lights and Hokusai style wave wallpaper.”
Kazan was founded in Singapore in 2012 and now has locations throughout Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Cambodia.
