The new store, which will likely be an Amazon Fresh or an Amazon Go, will replace Smart & Final Extra sometime in 2022. A recent liquor license application hints at the likeliness of an Amazon Fresh, considering they’re more likely to possess an instructional tasting license than an Amazon Go. This will become the 11th Amazon Fresh in California, all of which are in Los Angeles County except Fullerton, La Habra, and Irvine. All California Amazon Go’s are currently in San Francisco.
The first-ever outpost of the new grocery store concept first opened in Woodland Hills in September 2020. Since then, Los Angeles County has seen Amazon retailers popping up everywhere, including Amazon 4-Stars and Amazon Books. Most recently, Amazon has opened new stores in Woodland Hills and Cerritos, the latter offering Just Walk Out technology. Considering most of Amazon’s Retailers are incorporating this technology in their stores, it’s very likely shoppers can expect this at the new Torrance store.
The Just Walk Out concept adds convenience to customers’ shopping experience by skipping the checkout line. Customers can enter the store and shop normally using the In-Store QR code in their Amazon app, scan their palm with Amazon One, or insert a credit or debit card linked to their Amazon account. Anything taken off the shelf will be added to your virtual cart and vice versa. At the end of their trip, customers shopping simply scan or insert their entry method again to exit, and the amount is charged to your card. Traditional checkout lanes with employees will still be available for customers.
