Silverback Coffee of Rwanda is coming to El Segundo at 360 N Pacific Coast Hwy. This will be the Rwandan coffee roaster’s second location.
Founder Jack Karuletwa’s mission is a noble one, to “help the poorest coffee farmers realize their value, empower the human resources that make it possible for every Rwandan to become a part of a global economy, and celebrate the power of the human spirit everyday – with a cup of coffee in hand,” per the company’s website.
Silverback works towards its mission by donating a percentage of its profits to organizations that build schools in local areas and provide services to widows and orphans as a result of the genocide.
Their coffee is exclusively grown on small farms in five distinct regions: the Virunga Mountain Region, Akagera Region, Kivu Lave Region, Kizi Rift Valley Region, and the Muhazi Lake Region. The site continues, ”With volcanic soils, abundant rainfall and high altitude mountains, Rwanda has some of the best coffee-growing conditions in the world.”
Silverback partners with several organizations, including Gorilla Doctors, which is dedicated to conserving mountain and eastern lowland gorillas; Foundation Rwanda, committed to funding the education of children born from the 1994 genocide; and the University of Global Health Equity, a new kind of health sciences university in Rwanda.
