The unanimous late May vote paves the way DOCS Health, which specializes in spinal and orthopedic care, to more than double the size of its existing roughly 21,000-square-foot center at the site. The move is part of an effort by the organization to provide a broader range of medical services for its specialities, such as urgent care, What Now Los Angeles reported in the spring.

Plans call for the demolition of the existing specialty medical hospital building to make way for a new 81-foot-tall building designed by Mesa Design Architects.

The project’s second through fifth floors will hold various hospital functions, including surgical and recovery rooms, over ground-floor pharmacy or retail space. The hospital will contain four operating theaters, 17 inpatient suites, and an imaging center, according to DOCS Health’s website, which lists a projected opening date of mid-2023.

Some of the project’s 40 parking spaces will also be provided in its ground floor, as well as through surface parking on the eastern portion of the project site.

The building’s rooftop will offer a landscaped deck with features including a community garden.

A holding company managed by DOCS Health founding partners and physicians Dr. Khawar Siddique and Dr. Brian Perri acquired the existing hospital building in 2019 for $20 million, according to Los Angeles County property records.
